The Tunnel of Hugsy Goode

When I was asked to update the art for this classic Eleanor Estes book, I read the first chapter and this image came to me. Very dark – the boys peering in. Originally, I had the cover all in black and white, but my editor felt it needed color. I added a bit, but it still has quite a bit of black.

This is one of my personal favorites. Whereas I often will do three to ten versions of a cover to reach the final, this “Tunnel” art was the very first and only drawing I did for the cover.
